SEW_04 | Learning about bobbin thread tension the hard way.
Sewing | Learning about bobbin thread tension the hard way.
Hi everyone, my name is Michele.
and in today’s sewing diary, I would like to
continue on from the previous bobbin winding and auto threading tutorial.
There were some thread tension problem if you haven watched
so right now I am going to resolve that issue
Let me show you what’s wrong.
As you can see, there are visible loops at the top of the stitch, which are signs of loose bottom thread.
So I thought I have to fix that by either loosening the dial at the top of the machine or tighten it.
and I started by loosening the dial from 3 to 2
Of course it didn’t help but I didn’t know better then.
It actually got worse as I made the top stitch looser.
The same problem persists.
The ideal tension I hope to achieve is depicted at the bottom of the screen
where the bottom stitch is barely visible from the top of the fabric
and holding the top stitch perfectly tight against the fabric.
I didn’t know better then so I just kept loosening the top thread tension all the way down to no. 1
Of course it didn’t help, but this was my journey.
Learning that bottom thread tension has nothing to do with top thread tension dial.
Since this is my video diary, I’m going to keep this footage to remember how I learnt the lesson the hard way.
and of course it got worse, there were even loose knots forming
New discovery, how to form loose knots at the bottom of the fabric.
I think this applies to a lot of things in life, if you’re lost and not sure what to do, don’t stand still,
just work on something positive, that feels right, the answer will come in time if you don’t give up.
I totally have no inkling as to what to do as you can tell by my next action.
Now, I tighten the stitch again….
and again…
and again…
until I was starting to think maybe this machine is broken.
then I realise that I haven’t been paying much attention to how the bobbin was installed.
so I decided to re-install the bobbin thread
At first, I thought that as long as the thread hangs behind the needle it will work fine.
Actually the answer had been just under my nose all these while, ok, this is what I did.
I removed the bobbin, made sure it went in again with the thread coming out counter clockwise.
Slide the thread into the slots I am suppose to according to the instructions.
Tuck the upper thread to the back.
Put the cover back on and turn on the machine.
Now let me test sew, this time without the auto reverse stitch and auto cut function.
It worked well…and I am happy and thankful that I can finally start a project or two.
As long as there are no funny noise I know it will work.
The stitches came out taut along the whole stitch.
Now let’s try the auto reverse and cutting function.
Let me turn on the auto reverse and auto cut function on the LED screen.
Tuck the top thread under the presser foot and behind the needle.
I should have removed these wispy threads but I didn’t so see what happened.
I think the wispy ends of the fabric got stuck in the dog foot, so everything clumped together.
With so much noise, you know something is not right, so I had to stop.
I can’t even remove the fabric, I had to open up the whole sewing compartment.
Remove the bobbin thread and unscrew the metal plate.
if you want to watch the step by step of how to remove and reinstall the sewing compartment,
I am going to speed up how i fixed this problem this round.
The design of this makeshift screwdriver is not friendly at alI I must say, very clumsy.
All that just to remove this!
Now the whole cycle of putting the plate back with this clumsy screw driver.
Replace the presser foot and bobbin thread.
Oops..wrong thread direction… the thread MUST come out off the bobbin anti-clockwise.
and finally, i hope this time it works 100% or else it’s the machine’s fault.
that’s the sound of the auto reverse and auto cut function.
Now it worked so well, I kept wanting to redo it again.
