Motion 5 | How to animate caterpillar

Hi Everyone! This is going to be a tutorial on how to animate a caterpillar movement on an Apple motion 5. Let’s get started. File > New > Open up a new canvas > Motion project. I’m using HD 720 and 30 frames per second for 10 seconds. Open up our new canvas.

Let’s change the color of our background. Click on Project. Open up heads-up display and change the background to a light color. Whatever light colored at you like.

Let’s draw our caterpillar using Bezier tool at the bottom of the canvas. The button that looks like a pen. When you see a pen tool on your canvas, click on Shift and click on your canvas.

Let’s do that again. Click on Shift, without letting go your Shift drag horizontally.

Second point. Click and drag horizontally. Click and drag horizontally.

You will have a line that curves up like a small hill. Then press Enter. Now our outline is black in colour. We change it to dark green, without a fill. No fill. We want the

the caterpillar to look without effect. We will start animating. Go to inspector and under shape go to geometry, watch these three points move as we press the record . When you press record at the 0:0 point. When the playhead is at 0:0 point, move the whole caterpillar using a transform tool the third button… oh no, the first button under the canvas window. The first button under the canvas window. Click transform. Move it . Now you can see your caterpillar it’s okay I’m gonna show you how to tell motion to let us see the caterpillar. View > Show full view area. It’s still recording so we go to the half a second point, 0.5s and then now we’re gonna move the caterpillar. We’re going to move the head, slightly. Holding down Shift and then without
holding down shift, I move it slightly to the front. First second and move tail forward.

Move the body point upwards. Half a second ahead. Move the caterpillar head forward move the body point downwards. Half a second ahead. Move the tail forward. Move the body point upwards. Move the playhead half a second ahead. Basically just repeating  this movement,

to simulate the movement of the caterpillar moving forward. You move the tail forward as it comes into view. Move the body point upwards. Move your playhead half a second forward.

Move the caterpillar forward. As we do this, Motion 5 is recording every movement to the points here. You can watch the coordinates of X point and white point. Then, move the play head. You can check the movement if you move the play head backwards. So we are done here.

It is still recording, so we move half a second ahead. Where were we? [Music] Straighten. So now, we should curve it up. The tail should move ahead. The body move upwards. Now the head moves the ahead. [Music] my body move, body point move downwards. Then, I’ll do the last one. Last movement. Tail moves ahead and the body curves upwards. Once you’re done, happy the movement, turn off  the recording.

Let’s play back and see what we have done. Our caterpillar is moving into view.

That’s it for today. This is a tutorial on how to animate a caterpillar on Apple motion  5.

Thanks for watching! My name is Michele and I’ll see you in the next video [Music]
